Alabama State Parks Bladon Springs State Park

Bladon Springs State Park, located in Choctaw County, AL, is a 357 acre park centered around four mineral springs. It can be found approximately one mile north of Bladon Springs, in the Southwest area of Alabama. The park is open from 7am until sundown.

Originally opened in 1838 as a spa, guests would travel from all over the United States to experience the “curing” properties of the mineral springs. Those springs contained sulfur, iron, magnesium, and calcium. In 1846 a large mansion, styled after the Greek Revival, was built to accommodate 200 people. This made it one of Alabama’s largest wooden hotels to be built.

Nicknamed the “Saratoga of the South”, the “health” resort remained open through the Civil War. It eventually closed after the turn of the century, when the novelty of mineral springs had worn off. In 1934 the State of Alabama purchased the property.

Bladon Springs State Park provides a modern campground with 10 available campsites. Each of these include water, 30 amp electricity, sewer connections, a picnic table and grill. There are also restrooms available, but no shower facilities.

Throughout the park you can find picnic tables and grills, but they are available on a first come, first serve basis only. However, you many rent a group pavilion for $25.00 per day, by reservation. There is also a nice playground for the children to enjoy, while the adults relax and take in the serene nature.
