Alabama State Park Monte Sano State Park

The Monte Sano State Park is a state park facility in Huntsville, Alabama. Monte Sano State Park plays host to many different events and programs throughout the year. This is the perfect spot for a family vacation, whether you want to rough it camping in the wide open space, or you prefer to explore the park by day and have all the best amenities at nightfall.

If you want to make this an overnight vacation, the Monte Sano State Park offers camping facilities as well as cabins and a group lodge. The park is open from 7am until sundown each day. You can make reservations for cabins and group lodging by calling the lodge at the park.

Other amenities that visitors will have access to include the playground, hiking trails, and the picnic area. You can also check out the nearby attractions in the area.

Monte Sano, or “Mountain of Health” rises more than 1,600 feet above sea level. This mountain has been a popular tourist attraction since the 1820′s. The popularity grew when the town of Viduta was established nearby. The town featured a sanatorium as well as a hotel resort. The resort folded at the turn of the century due to a declining economy.

In the 1930′s the CCC tackled the task of building a state park atop Monte Sano Mountain, and this group is responsible for 11 of the original stone cabins. There were 3 additional cabins built later. The Monte Sano Lodge is an excellent location for weddings, family reunions, or business meetings.

For those who love to look out into the sky and stare at the stars, there is an on-site observatory, astronomical library, solar telescope and planetarium. These are operated by the Von Braun Astronomical Society, a non-profit volunteer organization made up of amateur and professional astronomers.

If you really want to get back to nature, there are 89 different camping sites and 2 full bath houses throughout Monte Sano State Park. This is the best choice for those who wish to spend the entire week outdoors exploring the park and taking in some of the best natural scenery in Alabama.
