Alabama State Park Lake Lurleen State Park

Located nine miles northwest of the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport, Alabama and 14 miles from the campus of the University of Alabama, home of the “Crimson Tide”, is Lake Lurleen State Park. The name comes from Lurleen Wallace, Alabama’s only female governor. Wife of former Governor George C. Wallace, she was a native of Tuscaloosa County. Lurleen Wallace was instrumental in funding a major renovation project of Alabama State Parks while serving as Governor.

Set on the banks of a 250 acre lake, with over 1,600 acres of park to enjoy, Lake Lurleen State Park makes for a scenic lakeside retreat. You will find a modern campground, picnic area, fishing piers, play area, boat rentals, activity building, boat launch areas and a beach with bathhouse to satisfy all your needs. Day use areas are open 7am to sunset to non-camping guests. There is an entrance fee for day use that includes park entrance, picnicking, boat launching, swimming, fishing and multi-trail use. A state fishing license is required to fish and available for purchase at the park.

Overlooking the scenic lake are 91 modern campsites. All include water and electric hook-ups, with 35 sites having sewage drain connections. There are 37 RV storage sites available to rent daily or long term. Call for details and openings. For the convenience of the campers, a sewage dumping station and modern bathhouse facilities are available. Using the boat launch, fishing and swimming are all included in the camping fee. Feel free to bring your pets to the park and campground area, but must be on a leash at all times. The swimming area, the beach, the beach parking lot or adjoining areas are not pet friendly. Be aware of the posted signs.

Measuring nearly one and a half miles long and up to a half mile wide, with the deepest point of the lake being 48 feet, Lake Lurleen is a man-made lake. Officials keep it stocked with bream, crappie, largemouth bass and catfish. There are three fishing piers, two boat launching ramps and fishing boat and canoe rentals available to meet all your needs. There is no size limit on gasoline motors on the lake, although water or jet skiing is prohibited. Children under 8 years of age are required to wear approved life jackets at all time while on board the boat. The boat must be currently registered and the operator must possess a valid boater’s license. There is no swimming allowed from the boat. Swimming is restricted to the marked beach area and there is no lifeguard on duty. Cooking is prohibited on the beach, beach pavilion, parking lot and surrounding areas. The small beachside pavilion is available on a first come first serve basis.

Picnic areas are available at Lake Lurleen State Park, as well as four pavilions that are available for rent. The pavilions have eight tables each and will accommodate approximately 80 people. Each one also has lights and a power outlet. Please not the power outlet is only 20 amps, therefore it is not designed to run large electric fans or several appliances at one time. Tables and pedestal charcoal grills are located on site, but you are welcome to bring your own grill. Please call for pavilion reservations.

Lake Lurleen State Park offers almost 20 miles of trails. Motorized vehicles and horses are not permitted on the trails. All trails open at 7am and close at sunset. There is no overnight camping allowed on the trails.

Need a place to hold a meeting or have a reunion? There is an activity room for rent in the park. It includes (3) eight ft. tables, (8) six ft. tables and 50 chairs. The renter is responsible for taking down the tables and chairs before leaving. No grilling is allowed in or around this building, therefore all food must be cooked prior to bringing it into the activity room. Crock pots, electric skillets, etc are permitted to keep food warm. There is no kitchen, only a water cooler, and adjoining restrooms. Garbage cans are provided with extra liners, but renter is also responsible for bagging all garbage. The activity room must be reserved in advance.

Annual Passes are available for purchase at Lake Lurleen State Park and are valid for one year from date of purchase. They are only valid for day use and does not include camping or boat rental fees.

There are four major events hosted annually in the park. Camp Partlow Duathlon is a 2 mile run – 20 mile bike ride – 2 mile run. Tour De Tuscaloosa Road Race is the Druid City Road Race at the park. A Youth Fishing Rodeo is held there yearly. The newest event is the 2nd Annual Nicholas Wilson Memorial Tashka Trail 50K, 25K, and 4 Mile Runs.
