Alabama State Park Chewacla State Park

Chewacla State Park, located near Auburn University, is the perfect place to stay on football weekends. The park has 696 acres of beautiful scenery, including a 26 acre lake with swimming area. Although the park does not rent boats, you are permitted to bring your own small non-motorized watercraft, such as a canoe or kayak, as long as you can hand launch it. With a valid Alabama Fishing License, feel free to enjoy some fishing inside the park. Operating hours are 7am until sundown.

This park features an array of wildlife, such as squirrels, red fox, turkeys, chipmunks and deer. You can also find unusual rock formations and a diverse collection of native flora and trees throughout the park. There are three large pavilions you can sit down and enjoy a picnic under, but remember that these are only available by reservation taken up to four months in advance. One pavilion features a fireplace used for cool-weather heating or cooking, which also has a nice overlook onto Lake Chewacla. There is a playground in the lower picnic area for the kids, and picnic tables and grills can be found throughout the park, available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There is a lakefront beach area in Chewacla State Park that is open daily, with a restroom and swimming area for summer visitors to enjoy. Keep in mind that there is no lifeguard on duty.

Chewacla State Park features eight trails that cover the mountain range, in various difficulty, with hiking times from 20 minutes to 80 minutes. These lead to the beautiful 30 foot Chewacla Dam Waterfall. In addition to the hiking trails, the park’s trail system also has a Tree Identification Trail and a Mountain Bike Trail.

There are six newly renovated 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps era stone cottages in the park, three of which are “dog friendly” cabins. Although available year around, reservations are still required. All cabins feature new bathrooms, stone fireplaces, hardwood floors, modern kitchens with a stove, refrigerator, toaster, microwave and coffee maker, as well as cooking and eating utensils. Linens and televisions are provided with each cabin, as well as central heating and cooling. But there are no telephones. Included in the rental fee are swimming privileges.

If you are looking for a great place to take the family on vacation, or just want to get away with that special someone, Chewacla State Park is a great choice. The variety of activities, special events, and sight seeing make this park a perfect place to relax and get back to nature.
